Cary List, CPA, CA, CFP®
President & CEO, FPSC
As President & CEO, Cary leads the establishment of FPSC as the premier standards-setter for financial planning in Canada and CFP® certification as the standard for financial planners. Cary works tirelessly to elevate the standards of the designation and achieve recognition of financial planning as a distinct profession.
Cary first became involved with FPSC as a volunteer member of the inaugural Panel of Examiners in 1998, joining the organization as Vice President of Standard and Certification in 2002. He became Chief Operating Officer in 2004 and took on the role of President & CEO in 2006. Prior to joining FPSC, Cary was an academic Director at George Brown College in Toronto where he established a baccalaureate program in financial planning, accounting and banking. Cary also spent several years overseeing financial planning practices in Toronto and developing and delivering financial planning programs for public and private sector organizations across Ontario. Cary started his career as a Chartered Accountant and accounting information systems consultant.
Among his many accomplishments at FPSC, Cary has overseen the launch of the FPSC Financial Planning Practice Standards and the CFP® Professional Competency Profile, which, for the first time, clearly defined the knowledge, skills, abilities and ethics Canadians should expect from financial planners, the Practice Standards for CFP professionals and the establishment of the two-level CFP certification program that included adoption of a constructed-response, competency-based CFP certification examination.
A valued member of the global community, Cary was instrumental in the development of the international competency profile now used for 150,000 CFP professionals around the world. He has advanced international excellence in financial planning, working closely with FPSC’s international member organization, the Financial Planning Standards Board, and a number of international affiliates.
Under Cary’s leadership and in collaboration with partner organizations across Canada, FPSC’s vision for a single set of national standards for financial planning is closer to fruition than ever before.
