The Dark Side of Employee Engagement

Practice Area Division(s): Industrial/Organizational

Topic: Testing, Measurement, and Psychometrics

Session Type: Ignite

This session provides a fresh perspective on employee engagement, focused on three key points. First, it will examine an important but largely neglected aspect of engagement, which is its dispositional nature. In particular, it will discuss the degree to which variability in engagement can be attributed to bright and dark side personality characteristics. Second, the session will examine the idea of curvilinear links between engagement and performance - can you be too engaged to perform well? Third, the session addresses whether engagement truly drives productivity more than vice-versa. Practical implications, especially regarding strategic innovations concerning the assessment of employee engagement, will be considered.
